FAQs
Why should my child join the swim team?
Mostly to have fun! The goal of the swim team is to boost swimmer's confidence and enjoy great exercise all while having fun with their friends. You never know-your child might find a new sport they love!
How do I know if my child is ready to join the team?
Your child should be able to swim the entire length of the pool without assistance. For the youngest swimmers (under 6 years old), our coaches can be in the water with them while they swim if they are not yet confident enough. If your child is close to being able to do this now, please sign them up and we will build their skills!
How many practices should my child attend?
While this is a child dependent answer, we encourage all swimmers to try to attend a minimum of 3 practices a week. Practices will focus on stroke technique as well as building endurance through the season for faster swimming. Performance at meets is directly correlated to practice!
Are parents expected to stay for practice?
While there is no expectation for parents to stay, your presence is an encouragement to your swimmer. You will become familiar with what they are learning and how they are learning the strokes to be able to offer encouragement and reinforcement of coaches instructions. Please be early to pick up your child at the end of practice-the coaches and lifeguards are not responsible for your children left unattended at the pool. Pool rules apply outside of practice times.
How do I sign my child up for a swim meet?
Swimmers have to sign up for each swim meet no later than 10am on the Friday before the meet. This sign up can be done easily via the swimtopia app or on the sign up calendar page under Meets and Events. Coaches will be making event assignments immediately following practice and swimmers not signed up will not be able to swim in the meet.
What can we expect at swim meets?
Please see our Swim Meet 101 page for detailed information on meets
What suit does my swimmer need to wear to meets?
The team suit can be purchased through the link to our team store. Swimmers are welcome to wear a suit from a previous year if they prefer, but please ensure that swimmers are wearing green or black suit at meets. Note-all purchases from the team store earns our team commission. We will use that commission money towards swimmer awards at the end of the season!
What do I do if my child can't make it to a swim meet after the swimmer event assignments have been made?
We understand last minute things and illnesses happen. If your child is unable to make it, please contact your child's coach as soon as possible. A lot of time is spent selecting events and creating heat sheets, so please only pull your child from a meet for emergencies.
What can I do to help the team?
- Volunteer to help at meets! Meets are fully parent run, but we promise-the more involved you are the more fun your swimmer will have!
- Come to practices and support your swimmer and coaches
- Watch the posted you tube videos with your swimmer (linked here) to learn more about proper stroke technique and disqualification rules. We will review these things in practice often, but visual reinforcement is helpful for many!
- Join our parent committee-contact Kate Moore or Griffin Lynch for more information.
